Health expert and Harvard Professor Dr Rifat Atun shares his views on managing the COVID-19 pandemic. He stresses the importance of implementing a portfolio of interventions in tandem, with constant monitoring of quality data to inform the scale and scope of the interventions to prevent a second wave of outbreaks. He also highlights the characteristics of resilient health systems capable of flexibly expanding capacity for an agile and sustainable pandemic response.

COVID-19 is not a sprint, it's a marathon. When easing restrictions governments must constantly monitor, and avoid complacency. Dr Atun advises countries to rigorously collect data to inform decisions, perform ongoing testing — general and targeted — to cover outbreaks, constantly communicate with and support the public to encourage safe behavior.
