Health expert and Harvard Professor Dr Rifat Atun shares his views on managing the COVID-19 pandemic. He stresses the importance of implementing a portfolio of interventions in tandem, with constant monitoring of quality data to inform the scale and scope of the interventions to prevent a second wave of outbreaks. He also highlights the characteristics of resilient health systems capable of flexibly expanding capacity for an agile and sustainable pandemic response.
The Global Pathfinder Report has summarized practical, proven approaches for successfully addressing COVID-19. Countries have already implemented combinations of these approaches and are showing the results. We see this report as an important contribution to global learning on managing COVID-19.
COVID-19 is not a sprint, it's a marathon. When easing restrictions governments must constantly monitor, and avoid complacency. Dr Atun advises countries to rigorously collect data to inform decisions, perform ongoing testing — general and targeted — to cover outbreaks, constantly communicate with and support the public to encourage safe behavior.
There's no real playbook available today for fighting an invisible enemy like COVID-19! We created a new playbook from case studies of countries that are doing well with their pandemic responses to document what's working and share the lessons with governments all over the world.
